After Dark in the Park - Kilauea Volcano’s East Rift Eruption: 29 Years and Counting, Tue, Jan 3, 7 p.m., Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. Today marks the 29th anniversary of Kilauea’s ongoing east rift zone eruption. Geologist Tim Orr reviews highlights and talks about recent developments on Kilauea’s east rift zone. $2 donation supports park programs. Park entrance fees apply. 985-6011

Above and Below Hike, Wed, Jan 4, 11, 18, 25, 1 p.m. –Discover the hidden world of lava tubes in this 1.5 mile, one-hour hike to Thurston Lava Tube. Flashlights recommended. Meet at the Kilauea Iki Overlook on Crater Rim Drive.

Pu`uloa Hike, Thu, Jan 5, 12, 19, 26, 1 p.m. –Visit one of Hawai`i’s most extensive petroglyph fields in this two‐mile, 1.5-hour hike along one of Kilauea’s coastal trails. Meet at the parking lot on the Chain of Craters Road.

Devastation Trail, Fri, Jan 6, 13, 20, 27, 1 p.m. Learn about the 1959 Kilauea Iki eruption and how the devastated forest has recovered in the years since during this 1.5-hour hike. Meet at Pu`u Paui parking lot on Crater Rim Drive. 

Plastic Ocean, Fri, Jan 6, 5:30 - 7 p.m., Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. Capt. Charles Moore identified and studied the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, where plastic debris from around the North Pacific Rim is swirled together by ocean currents. His book, Plastic Ocean: How a Sea Captain’s Chance Discovery Launched a Determined Quest to Save the Oceans, will be available. Free; donations welcome. 967-8222

Observation/Inspiration, daily beginning Sat, Jan 7, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Volcano Art Center Gallery in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. This group exhibit celebrating Hawai`i Volcano Observatory’s centennial features paintings by Catherine Robbins and Alan Fine, ceramics by Tim Freeman and a live performance by poet Kimberly Dark. Into the Volcano Hike, Sat, Jan 7, 14, 21, 28, 1 p.m. Explore Kilauea’s unique rain forest and volcanic landscape in this 2.7‐mile, two- or three-hour hike down to the floor of Kilauea caldera and back up. Meet at the Kilauea Visitor Center.

Kilauea Iki Crater Hike, Sun, Jan 8, 15, 22, 29, 1 p.m. This four‐mile, three-hour hike crosses a still‐steaming crater floor. Meet at the parking lot on Crater Rim Drive.

Sunday Walk in the Park, Jan 8, 1 – 3 p.m. Nick Shema leads this 3.5-mile round-trip walk that explores the summit area of the park. Meet at Kilauea Visitor Center. Free to Friends members. 985-7373 or admin@fhvnp.org.

Amazing Mauna Ulu Hike, Mon, Jan 9, 16, 23, 30, 10 a.m. – See lava trees, fissures, and other volcanic features formed during a 1969‐74 eruption in this one‐mile, one-hour guided hike. Meet at parking lot on the Chain of Craters Road.

After Dark in the Park - What’s happening in Halema‘uma‘u Crater? Tue, Jan 10, 7 p.m., Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. Geologist Matt Patrick presents an overview of Kilauea’s summit eruption, including a survey of the volcanic processes occurring within the vent. $2 donation supports park programs. HVO scientist‐in‐charge Jim Kauahikaua talks about Thomas Jaggar’s vision for the observatory, how Frank Perret began monitoring Kilauea volcano and HVO’s accomplishments during the past century. $2 donation supports park programs. Traditional Lei Making, Wed, Jan 25, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., Kilauea Visitor Center lanai Kumu hula Ab Kawainohoikala`i Valencia and his wife, Puamae`ole O’Mahoney, share the traditions of lei making for hula. Free; park entrance fees apply.

The Arts and Traditions of Hula at Kilauea, Sat, Jan 28, 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Kumu Leilehua Yuen and Manu Josiah present 50-minute narrated demonstrations of the preparation, protocol and offering of traditional hula and chant at the hula platform in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. Hands-on cultural demonstration 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. on the gallery porch. After Dark in the Park - Kilauea’s Volcanic Gases and Their Environmental Impact, Tue, Jan 31, 7 p.m., Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. Geochemists Jeff Sutton and Tamar Elias offer an update about volcanic gases, especially those related to the 2008‐2011 activity at Halema‘uma‘u Crater. BYON (Bring Your Own Nose) to the “gas tasting” party, where you can learn to identify volcanic gases by smell. $2 donation supports park programs. Park entrance fees apply. 985-6011
